Carter and Jax were so close that Carter knew his way around Jax’s kitchen as if it was his own. He came and went like he had every right to be there—like he meant something special to Jax. I was embarrassed to admit it, even to myself, but I was feeling possessive and insecure—and it was fucking pathetic. I’d always been totally in control in business and in relationships, but suddenly the rug was being yanked from beneath me.
The truth was, Jax and Carter were friends as well as lovers, and I was jealous because I wanted that sort of relationship with Jax. I’d never had that type of closeness with anyone since him, and although we’d had it once, it’d been stolen from us by my dad. By society. By myself for not fully standing up for my friend, regardless of how much I thought I’d tried at the time.
I watched Carter move around the kitchen as tunes played on the radio, his muscular form far more agile than I’d expected, though it was clear he was athletic. He popped down the toaster and then strode over to the fridge, tossing me a knowing smile. “Grab a seat, sunshine. Breakfast will be up in just a few.”
Is this what Jax and Carter normally got up to in the morning? It seemed so…easy. And it made me realize that I didn’t have anyone I was this close with. Everyone I knew was tied to work, and it was pathetic to admit, but I didn’t feel like I had any real friends because I was just too busy working all the time. My life revolved around the family business, and any “friends” I had were usually there because I was a good connection to have if they needed something—and if they weren’t kissing my ass, then they were my competition.
Unfortunately, I’d always felt this isolated and alone—except with Jax. He’d been my one true friend at school—the only person I’d felt comfortable with. And I’d been stupid enough to fuck it all up.
