Quick catch up on my reading and listening

It's been a week since I finished the reading challenge and I've been doing a fair amount of both listening (whilst crocheting presents and toys) and reading for fun.

Audio wise I've listened to

Audiobook:War Of Honor: Honor Harrington, Book 10 by David Weber Narrated by Allyson Johnson Narration 5 Story 5

Audiobook: At All Costs: Honor Harrington, Book 11 by David Weber Narrated by Allyson Johnson Narration 5 Story 5

Audiobook: A Hymn Before Battle:Legacy Of The Aldenata, Book 1 by John Ringo Narrated by Mark Vietor Narration 5 Story 5

Audiobook: Ethan Of Athos by Lois McMaster Bujold Narrated by Grover Gardner Narration 5 Story 5

Reading wise it's been mostly short m/m's (under 200 pages):

Alien Pleasure Station: Saving Jasper by E. Davies 2*

The Cassini Mission by Rob Colton 3*

True Nature by Jessica Freely 4*

Nonios Quick As Light Series [Gay Edition]
by Alice Miller (all three rated together as they are really just one longer story) 3*
Warning: The ending is truly strange!

Until Forever Comes (Mates, #2)
by Cardeno C 4*

Finished my reading challenge with a few days to spare.

The Last Operation [Remnants of War bk 1] by Patrick Astre 4*
BLURB: Deep in the swamps of the Everglades. Enlisted to lead a team of "recruits," a retired Special Forces Captain turned mercenary, must infiltrate a deadly world of deception and intrigue to conquer his most challenging opponent. Within this world lies a secret so critical. Devastation is imminent. For the last decade one man has led a team of rogue CIA agents into murder and betrayal. Now he is about to be nominated to head a newly created Federal super-agency, giving him unprecedented influence. This man's success will lead the United States government into an irreparable state of corruption and him into the position of ultimate power. Victory is critical. Only the courage and knowledge of one man can lead "the team" to triumph and only if they survive the last operation!

My Review: Drug wars and CIA involvement, betrayal by covert government operatives, bio-engineering, fast paced action, blood and gore. If any of these trigger your 'I want to read it' button then you want to pick this one up. It has them all and is well written with really great characters and an intrigue full plot line. The bad guys are really evil (but not in an over-the-top evil way) and the good guys make mistakes and get into a world of hurt but keep going. I hadn't read any of this authors works before but he is going on my list as a writer who can really tell a military/spy kind of story with realism.

A Netgalley ARC that I'm really glad I got.

Striker (The Valespian Pact #2) by Lexi Ander 5*
BLURB: The peaceful respite for which Zeus and his intended, Dargon and Alpha, had been hoping is shattered when Zeus is unexpectedly drawn to the Waters of Poseidon and told that the safety they've been promised is a trap.
But the Fal'Amoric aren't the only important cargo on the Oethra 7, and countless others are depending on the success of their mission. If Zeus hopes to break the silent siege on Valespia, and protect those most precious to him, he will need not just powerful allies but the fortitude to survive overwhelming odds

My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley. I read book one Alpha Trine about 17 months ago and I hated having to wait so long to read book two. This is such a clever and interesting series with amazing descriptions of the vast variety of alien beings. The main three characters are written so well that I was loath to reach the end of the book and leave them behind. However the action, intrigue and love was so intense that I couldn't put it down, so unfortunately I did reach the end after all. I am looking forward to reading book three (which I hope will include The main characters from the first two books)and am now girding my loins for another 17+ month wait.

Two more books read from May challenge

Sci Fi Sense of Humor by William Markly O'Neal 2*
BLURB William Markly O'Neal's 'Sci Fi Sense of Humor' is a collection of four science fiction novelettes, all with a slight (or not so slight) comedic touch. Two of these stories are a mixture of comedy and drama... and two are straight-out satires.
"The Rejection Letter That Destroyed the World" is the story of a man who is rejected by everyone he ever knows, even God Himself.
"Ubiquitous Marilyn" is a story written about You (in Second Person). In the far-flung future, there are only eight countries left in the world and they still can't get along. But don't worry. You won't have to pay much attention to 'current' events because you can tune in to the most popular hologig of all time!
"Paarma's Pernicious Pet" asks a simple question: what happens when an old-fashioned grandmother has to deal with her granddaughter adopting an extraterrestrial as a pet?
And in "The Green Fate of Wilbur Brown," you'll meet a man who hates doing yard work so passionately... well, you won't believe what he does to avoid mowing his lawn.
NO ACTUAL ALIENS WERE HURT IN THE MAKING OF THIS E-NOVEL.
The Extraterrestrials Are Coming...
... and some of them are ticking like time bombs

My Review: Well I can't say this amused me as much as I had hoped. The only one that made me smile was Paarma's Pernicious Pet the other stories were fine but just did nothing for my sense of humour. Mind you I have been told that that particular sense is very warped so other reader's might actually enjoy these.

The Animal Sagas (The Animal Sagas #1-3) by Susan G. Charles 1*
BLURB: Read all about the adventures of the Seron sisters, a pair of shapeshifting, were-cougars, and their adopted werewolf family in this 3 part set.
Animal Heat: A Paranormal Romance (Book 1), One minute Lynda Seron was having a regular, and even a plain old ordinary day at home with her sister, when something completely unexpected turns the night completely around in the worst way possible - for them both....
Animal Nature: A Paranormal Romance (Book 2), Sonya Seron was now under the care of a grouchy, though seriously handsome werewolf, due to a botched kidnapping attempt several months back. But then….
Animal Secrets: A Paranormal Romance (Book 3), The two sisters have some issues adjusting to pack life. Lynda, the older, more serious sibling, seems to be having more problems, not to mention the whole issue of her pregnancy. Will a terrible secret from their family lines past now end their future?

My Review: I picked this for the challenge because it said it was a paranormal romance and one of the choices was a book heavy in romance. Big mistake, this read more like a werewolf and werecat let's mate business deal thing going on. I found no romance in it that appealed to me at all. I found getting into it hard as at first I wasn't even sure how many sisters there were not did they ever really come to life for me throughout the three stories. If it wasn't for the challenge I think this would have been a DNF.

Another challenge book finished.

Starbleached (Starbleached #1) by Chelsea Gaither 2*
BLURB: The Overseers have enslaved humanity, and only Adrienne Parker has the cure. Maybe. If the test on the next-to-last free human colony goes smoothly.
Adrienne was given one task when she came to Holton Station: Develop a drug that will take humans off the Overseer menu. It didn’t hurt that her research partner, Dr. Bryan Landry, was hotter than the surface of Alpha Centauri. But that romantic distraction proved fatal. Bryan and Holton station were destroyed, leaving Adrienne alone with Space Marines and two thousand doses of the Landry Enzyme--humanity’s last hope against the Overseers. There are only two free human colonies standing between the aliens and Earth. If the Landry Enzyme doesn’t work, everyone is doomed.
Then Adrienne and the Landry Enzyme are captured before testing can begin. Stranded on a hostile planet with an Overseer renegade, Adrienne is given a terrible choice: help her enemy destroy Bryan’s research, or die as a monster’s midnight snack. Adrienne swears to be defiant to the last; at least she’ll give the alien indigestion.
But when a plague strikes the humans on the renegade’s world, she realizes the space between stars isn’t always so black-and-white…

My review: I was looking forward to this after reading the blurb and was mightily disappointed. It was a now and then book. As in each part was titled now or then and the whole thing kept jumping in an erratic manner. if the two timelines had had consistency it wouldn't have been too bad but then was (I think) over a year or so time span and even the now was (again, I think) over a month or two. I persevered, but it didn't really make any sense timeline wise for me by the end of the book. I doubt if I'll bother reading any more of the series to answer certain questions the reader is left with the time hop is just to erratic for me.

Loving Leif and listening

Loving Leif (Moon Pack #12)by Amber Kell 4*
BLURB: Leif is used to being alone but he guards his few friends with a vigilant eye. After hearing the mutants were planning to attack the Moon Pack he decides to ask Anthony for help in hunting down Lorus Korl, the psychotic scientist who created the mutants. When Blake, an ex-mutant agrees to accompany Leif to the Fae World. He isn’t sure what to make of the wolf shifter who claims they are soul mates and fated to be together.
Blake had been hoping to run into Leif now that he’d been reverted to his previous form. Upon learning Leif planned to wander into the Fae World alone he agrees to go along. After a sexy night of fun he knows Leif is his mate.
Rhaegar has waited year after lonely year for his mate. When two delicious shifters enter his world he knows he needs to convince them to stay. Unfortunately fate is fickle and Rhaegar might just lose his men before he’s had a chance make them his.

My Review: Started and finished this last night. A short story that adds a fair amount to the over all Moon Pack story arc but far too short for my likings. I enjoyed reading about Rhaegar, Blake and Leif and the little snippets of previous characters that came up, but would have loved to have more about both the story arc and the romance, but there again I am a greedy reader and am always wanting more!

One for challenge, one for fun.

So one more finished for the challenge and I reread another that wasn't on the list just for fun.

Challenge read
The Serpent's Shadow (Elemental Masters #2) by Mercedes Lackey 4*
BLURB: Mercedes Lackey returns to form in The Serpent's Shadow, the fourth in her sequence of reimagined fairy tales. This story takes place in the London of 1909, and is based on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Lackey creates echoes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, pays affectionate homage to Dorothy Sayers's Lord Peter Wimsey (who plays an important role under a thin disguise), and turns the dwarves into seven animal avatars who masquerade as pets of her Eurasian heroine, Maya.
Some of Maya's challenges come from the fact that she is not "snow white," and she has fled India for her father's English homeland after the suspicious deaths of her parents. Establishing her household in London, she returns to her profession as a physician, working among the poor. Her "pets" and loyal servants stand guard, and Maya herself uses what bits of magic she managed to pick up in childhood to weave otherworldly defenses as well. But the implacable enemy who killed her parents has come to London to search for her; if Maya can be enslaved, her enormous potential powers can be used to the enemy's ends. Fortunately, English magicians of the White Lodge have also noted a new, powerful presence in their midst, though they're having trouble locating her, too. They send Peter Scott, a Water Master, to track her down. He finds Maya beautiful and benign, and is determined to teach her to use the Western magic she is heir to, before her enemy discovers her.

My Review: Long time readers of my reviews will know, by now, that I love reworked fairy tales and this one is very good. However I wasn't as happy with it as I was with The Fire Rose, but that might be because my favourite fairy tale is Beauty & the Beast on which The Fire Rose is based. In The Serpent's Shadow I loved the historical setting of London in the early 1900's and Ms. Lackey was able to imbue the whole book with the atmospheric feelings of helplessness and despair of those times. The addition of the magic was carefully and skilfully embroidered into it so that the whole thing seemed very real. I liked all the characters but more than that I really loved Maya's 'pets'. It was worth reading the book just for them.

Reread
Bolo! (Bolo #14) by David Weber 4*
BLURB: Controlled by their tireless electronic brains which were programmed to admit no possibility of defeat, the gigantic robot tanks known as Bolos were almost indestructible, and nearly unstoppable. Their artificial intelligences were designed to make them selflessly serve and protect humans throughout the galaxy and made each Bolo the epitome of the knight sans peur et sans reproche, and often far more noble than the humans who gave them their orders. Now, David Weber, New York Times best-selling author of the Honor Harrington series, continues the history of the Bolo, in four short novels, one of them published here for the first time. One Bolo is driven over the edge by the very humans it is pledged to protect. Another Bolo must decide whether or not to disobey when it is given an order that constitutes genocide. A third must hunt one of its own kind whose robot brain is damaged and rescue two children which the deranged Bolo thinks it is protecting from a nonexistent enemy. And more, including as a bonus, David Weber's own authoritative technical history of the Bolo, all in a volume that will be irresistible both for David Weber's huge readership and Bolo fans everywhere.

My Review: It's been some years since I first read this book and my opinion of it hasn't changed. The stories are really good and I love any books about Bolos and am very glad that a lot of great science fiction writers have taken up the stories where Keith Laumer stopped. I first read this one from the library and this reread was my very own e-reader copy, the first I hope in getting my own collection of Bolos together so that I can reread them to my hearts content. There is just something primeval in me that responds to military science fiction stories about almost sentient 32,000 tonne tanks.

3 down 4.5 to go in reading challenge

Yes 4.5 because I am already half way through my 4th book (it's Mercedes Lackey so what can one expect).

So anyway book 3 took little time as I had 700+ audio files to transcribe! Plus I've been finishing off a birthday gift for my daughter's MIL and making the daughter a rainbow hearts afghan whilst listening to more audio books.

First an update on the audio books and then the review of book 3 in the challenge :D

Audiobook: Echoes Of Honor: Honor Harrington, Book 8 by David Weber Narrated by Allyson Johnson Narration 5 Story 5

Audiobook: Ashes Of Victory: Honor Harrington, Book 9 by David Weber Narrated by Allyson Johnson Narration 5 Story 5

Audiobook: Tooth and Nail by Mary Calmes Narrated by Andrew Schwartz Narration 3 Story 4

Audiobook: Falling Free by Lois McMaster Bujold Narrated by Grover Gardner Narration 4 Story 4

The Deadliest Bite (Jaz Parks #8) by Jennifer Rardin 5*

BLURB: I have two choices. Carve Brude's name into Hell's bile-encrusted gates. Or lose my soul.
After an assassination attempt on Vayl, I find myself pulled into a tangled web that takes the gang to Romania. So how will I save a ghost, rescue a demon, and cheat the Great Taker out of a soul he's slavering for while defeating my nastiest foe yet so that Vayl can, at last, cherish a few precious years with his sons? With careful planning, major violence, and one (hopefully) final trip to Hell.

My Review: This was the final book in the Jaz Parks book and was published posthumously, so unfortunately we will never again read anything in this vein by the author. This is a great pity because this book confirmed my opinion that Jennifer had a rare and wonderful talent. She takes you on an exhausting but exhilarating ride through the very bowels of hell and makes you enjoy it, all the while making you squirm at the ickyness and laugh at the humour. She brings the story of Jaz and Vayl to a soul satisfying conclusion without ever losing the grittiness of the series.

Two down in my reading challenge

This one was a very quick read - 210 pages in approximately 6 hours!

To Clan and Conquer (Clan Beginnings #1) by Tracy St. John 4*

BLURB: Starting a clan is not on ambitious First Officer Tranis’ agenda; he is too busy building a career in the Kalquorian fleet. It’s a good thing since the Nobek who captures his interest belongs to the captain and the Imdiko he can’t stop thinking about is not his type.
Weapons Commander Lidon feels his best days are behind him. The Imdiko he wants avoids him, and the new Dramok first officer is obviously too young to consider an older, crippled Nobek. However, an unexpected invitation makes Lidon wonder if there is something more to look forward to after all.
Head doctor Degorsk hides behind an offbeat sense of humor that shocks and keeps his fellow crewmembers at arms’ length – exactly where he wants them. But one Nobek refuses to be discouraged and the new first officer is too much temptation to deny himself.
As the trio is pulled together by attraction and pushed back apart by fear, an old enemy threatens the Kalquorian Empire. With no choice but to rely on each other for survival, Tranis, Lidon, and Degorsk are forced to expose their greatest terrors to each other…and themselves.
Contains elements of BDSM, including physical discipline, anal play/intercourse, bondage, Dom/sub play, forced seduction, multiple sexual partners and homoerotic situations (m/m/m).

My Review: I was attracted to this book because of both the cover (such pretty guys) and the fact that it was actually m/m/m and I haven't read many good ones of those in the past. I was hoping that it would be worth the read and I was delighted to find that it was. Yes it was full of lots of sex scenes but they were all very well written. In fact they were really very hot and yet somehow very emotional too. As for the rest of the story it was a well written science fiction story with lots of action and intrigue that blended within those sex scenes in such a way as to make the sex scenes an integral part of the whole. It is always a pleasant surprise to come across an author who can write an erotic story without the erotica swamping the main storyline into the mere blahness of porn but Tracy St. John has managed to avoid that trap and gives the reader an exciting and hot threesome adventure that is worth every penny spent on the book.

First book read in a May challenge

I decided to join a challenge on Goodreads for May and this is the first of eight books I will be reading for it.

Bitten in Two (Jaz Parks #7) by Jennifer Rardin 4*
BLURB: Jaz. Is. Pissed. She and Vayl had been operating like a couple of finely carved gears…until now. Just as they’re arriving in Morocco to secure an ancient artifact that must carve the name of Jaz’s possessor into the gates of hell if he’s to be vanquished, Vayl wakes up calling Jaz by another woman’s name. And it’s not even a good one. But since any form of argument transforms Vayl into an unholy terror, Jaz is forced to play along until she and the gang can figure out what kind of power has so vastly altered his perceptions.

My Review: It was great to finally get around to reading this (having read all the previous ones from the local library who ony had the first six) and I loved that as soon as I started reading I was immersed into the whole world of Jaz Parks.
The action was just as intense as I remembered it being from the first six and, to add to Jaz's already numerous problems, her boyfriend/boss thinks he's living in a past time and no longer recognises any of the group as who they really are. They have to continue with their mission whilst trying to help him recover his memory and this is both amusing and heart rending in turns.
All I can add to this without giving away spoilers is that I am glad I read it and I will be reading the last book sooon.

Also want to say that readers were deprived of a wonderful author when Jennifer died as I believe she would have written some really great stories if this series is anything to go by.

A wonderful new story in the old trope of Good v Evil

Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Author

The Bastard (The Baddest Boys in History, #1) by Inez Kelley 5*
BLURB: In the battle between good and evil, humans have never been more than collateral damage. Now they are prey. Mankind doesn’t need a hero. It needs a sinner.
Corrupt. Wicked. Nefarious. Contemptible….
The Baddest Boys in History are back!
You read about them in school. Now learn the truth. Real men. No vampires, no werewolves, no shifters. Just down and dirty raw power —sin to sin, evil to evil, bad to bad. They fight for humanity. It was that or eternal damnation.
They agreed to risk their souls. No one told them they would lose their hearts.
Coming this summer, Inez Kelley’s self-publishing debut.
BADDEST BOYS IN HISTORY Book #1 THE BASTARD
THE BASTARD: Vike died in blood, in battle, in betrayal. His ruthlessness was second only to his brutality. Now one woman makes his blood sing and he’ll stop at nothing to save her. He only has to face half of Hell to do it.
THE BEAUTY: Lacy is unknowingly descended from an ancient Holy line. Someone is slowly destroying her life and wants her dead. A fierce Viking comes to her rescue, and in his arms, she finds more than safety.
THE BAD NEWS: If Vike can’t protect Lacy, he’ll have to kill her. And for a bastard, what’s one woman worth when the entire world is in jeopardy?

My Review: This book isn't out until 18th May, but I highly recommend anyone into great heroes and powerful fight scenes with a dash of really romantic loving to go and buy this one.
The romance between Lacy and Erik is as good as any contemporary romance out there but what makes it stand out is the storyline supporting it. The baddest boys from history are really taken from history and it was fun trying to work out who each of them were from the descriptions and the nicknames (I managed to get six of them correct and did a happy dance each time I got it right). The way they deal with centuries of fighting the most evil of foes is written in such a way that, even if you aren't into god and satan style stories, you will still enjoy this book. To lighten the mood of Good v Evil fighting and heartfelt romances there is also a really humerous touch woven in with the repartee between those wonderful bad boys (and some really inspired T-shirt slogans too). I really only have one complaint about this book! That is, that I have to wait even longer than most of you to get my greedy little paws on Book Two!!
