Reviewing The Gallows Tree by R.J. Scott

The Gallows Tree by R.J. Scott 5*
BLURB: Cody Garret is only just finding his way after an abusive relationship ended with his ex in prison. Coming to England to restore Mill Cottage is his way of running so he has time to heal. His goal is simple-hire a company to help make the mill cottage saleable then go back to the States.
What he doesn't count on is meeting Sebastian Toulson-Brown, the brother of his contractor and the man who may be able to show him he can stop running.
But first Cody and Sebastian must deal with the ghosts of lost loves and the destinies that are woven into the story of the mill and the sycamore trees that stand on its land, one of which might be the gallows tree.

My Review: Recipe for a great story = take one Domestic Abuse Survivor, add a Tragic Ghost Story, stir in a little angst and romance, set it in a picturesque Olde World English Village and you get this book! I loved it!

Review Of Charming by Elliott James

Charming (Pax Arcana #1)by Elliott James DNF
BLURB John Charming isn't your average Prince...
He comes from a line of Charmings — an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chainmail and crossbows to kevlar and shotguns, he was one of the best. That is — until he became the abomination the Knights were sworn to hunt.
That was a lifetime ago. Now, he tends bar under an assumed name in rural Virginia and leads a peaceful, quiet life. One that shouldn't change just because a vampire and a blonde walked into his bar... Right?

My Review Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley I was really looking forward to reading this book as the blurb sounded so good. Unfortunately I just couldn't get into it. Right from the start there was loads of information and no story to follow and the further I went the worse it seemed to get. In the end I gave up and hope that someone else will enjoy the story to compensate for all the hard work the author has put into it.

Review Of The Companions by R A Savatore

The Companions (The Sundering #1 The Legend of Drizzt #24)by R.A. Salvatore 4*
BLURB: This latest installment in New York Times bestselling author R.A. Salvatore's beloved fantasy saga, The Companions moves Salvatore's signature hero Drizzt into a new era of the Forgotten Realms. As Drizzt's fate hangs in the balance, he reflects on the lives of the trusted allies who stood by his side throughout his early life--the friends now known as the Companions of the Hall. Meanwhile, the first stirrings of the Sundering begin.
My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley This is actually a continuation of a series with the same Characters but you don't need to have read the previous ones to understand and enjoy this one. It is a High Fantasy novel in a very typical R A Salvatore style, this means that it is wordy and emotional and (for me) takes a long time to get into at the beginning. If you enjoy Dungeons & Dragons, Michael Moorcock's Elric books or Piers Anthony then you are more than likely going to enjoy this story of The Forgotten Realms.

Review Of According to Plan by Madison J. Edwards

According to Plan by Madison J. Edwards 4*
BLURB: What do you do when things don't go According to Plan? For starters, you trick, deceive, and lie to the very person who ruined your best laid plans. Welcome to the world of Shelby Stewart, Private Investigator, who's been hired to find Harrison Grant. To complicate matters further, her ex-partner, ex-lover, ex-everything Tank shows up looking for Harrison as well, albeit for a very different reason. Harry is the prime suspect in the grisly murder of a call girl, Lulu, in L.A. That wouldn't be so bad, but Tank plans on staying at Shelby's house, and makes it obvious he's quite willing to help her heat the sheets, again. Shelby knows that sex with Tank is dangerous, fast, and sometimes a little dirty. Now is not the time to become side-tracked. Besides, this job could launch her company into a whole new stratosphere, so it's imperative she remain focused. Frustration becomes Shelby's newest partner as she makes plans to out maneuver Tank in their parallel quest. Tank, on the other hand, is always one step ahead of the game-and is not what, or who, Shelby thought.
My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Author I've never heard of Strip Pool before but after reading about it in According To Plan I want to play it (preferably with Tank!!). This is an easy read with lots of hot sex but, more than that, it has plenty of intrigue and romance to spice it up. I started off feeling like both Tank and Shelby needed to be smacked upside the head, through wanting to give them both cuddles to finally heaving a sigh of relief at the ending. If you like your romance spiced up with interesting and intriguing action then this is for you.

Review of St-St-Stuffed by Anyta Sunday

St-St-Stuffed (Enemies to Lovers #2) by Anyta Sunday 5*
BLURB: Karl and Paul have grown up, and a twist of fate has the two meeting again... As boys Karl bullied Paul, now they meet again as adults, and Paul shows a kind forgiveness to Karl. But can they ever form something more between them on such a rocky past?
My Review: I really liked this story, it had plenty of drama and romance but it never got too gushy or morbid. The consequences of their school days reverberates through their relationship, showing that our pasts always have some influence on who we are now. Ms Sunday gives us a wonderful story that grabs from page one and keeps you interested until the last page. Mind you having a really cute kid in there doesn't hurt either :D

Review Of Awkward Holidays by Kallysten

Awkward Holidays (Ward Of The Vampire #3) by Kallysten 4*
BLURB: Trapped in the Ward mansion with a reluctant and standoffish host – a vampire she should be afraid of but can’t help being attracted to – Angelina is preparing herself for grim, lonely holidays.
When her parents unexpectedly decide to visit, the situation, far from improving, only grows more complicated. They look forward to visiting New York with her, but how can she explain that she’s unable to leave the mansion? For that matter, what will they say when they realize she lives with a millionaire?
A hastily concocted excuse smoothes things over, but now Angelina finds herself having to work closely with Morgan Ward. It wouldn’t be so bad if Morgan was as pleasant to her as he is to her parents, but his mercurial moods leave her confused and frustrated. It doesn’t help that he seems no closer to finding a way for her to leave his house.
The New Year brings change with a startling kiss and an even more surprising guest… or is it more of the same?

My Review: Complimentary Copy provided by Author in exchange for an honest review I liked this latest episode of the Ward Of The Vampire ongoing story. The Characters are filling out nicely and there are glimpses of more behind the scenes that are very intriguing. I liked that it was a quick and easy read but am now unhappy at having to wait for the next installment. One warning though you need to read these stories in order to getthe best out of them!

Reviewing Brothers Of The Wild North Sea by Harper Fox

Brothers of the Wild North Sea by Harper Fox 5*
BLURB: His deadliest enemy will become his heart’s desire.
Caius doesn’t feel like much of a Christian. He loves his life of learning as a monk in the far-flung stronghold of Fara, but the hot warrior blood of his chieftain father flows in his veins. Heat soothed only in the arms of his sweet-natured friend and lover, Leof.
When Leof is killed during a Viking raid, Cai’s grieving heart thirsts for vengeance—and he has his chance with Fenrir, a wounded young Viking warrior left for dead. But instead of reaching for a weapon, Cai finds himself defying his abbot’s orders and using his healing skills to save Fen’s life.
At first, Fen repays Cai’s kindness by attacking every Christian within reach. But as time passes, Cai’s persistent goodness touches his heart. And Cai, who had thought he would never love again, feels the stirring of a profound new attraction.
Yet old loyalties call Fen back to his tribe and a relentless quest to find the ancient secret of Fara—a powerful talisman that could render the Vikings indestructible, and tear the two lovers’ bonds beyond healing.
Warning: contains battles, bloodshed, explicit M/M sex, and the proper Latin term for what lies beneath those cassocks.

My Review: I am not one to read books about religion or monks as a rule but there was something about the blurb on this one that made me try and win it. Lucky me I won and I am ever so glad I did as it was so good. The religion was there but in such a way as to give the reader a sense of the history and birth of the Christian belief alongside the pagan beliefs of the time. The actions of the Vikings as they raided the monasteries is well known but this story brought it to life and made it seem so very real. I felt as if I was living through all the turmoil that the main character endured and I was moved to tears (so naturally this gets a 5* for that emotional pull)but I was also amazed at the accuracy and intensity that came over in every word. I believe that people should read this even if they aren't very religious as it's one of those stories that will stay with you and influence how you think in the future.

A Veritable Orgy Of Reading!

Review Of Scrap Metal by Harper Fox 5*
BLURB: Is there room for love in a heart full of secrets?
One year ago, before Fate took a wrecking ball to his life, Nichol was happily working on his doctorate in linguistics. Now he’s hip deep in sheep, mud and collies. His late brother and mother had been well suited to life on Seacliff Farm. Nichol? Not so much.
As lambing season progresses in the teeth of an icy north wind, the last straw is the intruder Nichol catches in the barn. He says his name is Cam, and he’s on the run from a Glasgow gang. Something about the young man’s tired resignation touches Nichol deeply, and instead of giving him the business end of a shotgun, he offers Cam a blanket and a place to stay.
Somehow, Cam quickly charms his way through Nichol’s defenses and into his heart. Even his grandfather takes to the cheeky city boy, whose hard work and good head for figures help set the farm back on its feet.
As the cold Scottish springtime melts into summer, Nichol finds himself falling in love. When tragedy strikes, Cam’s resolutely held secret is finally revealed and Nichol must face the truth. He’s given his heart away, and it’s time to pay the price.

My Review: I loved this story. It was full of emotion and reality. The plight of trying to survive in a harsh physical and economical environment came through in every word. Yet the love that grows between the two main characters softened the harshness just right. The author had some great lines and a plethora of Gaelic in the book and it was well worth reading just for those.

Review Of Darkling Mine by Andra Sashner 3*
BLURB: Set to solve the mystery of a recent string of highway robberies, Bjorn is startled when he hears the details of the crimes—as though the very darkness comes to life to attack the nobles trapped within their carriages. It is a description he knows very well indeed, a description that puts the robber far closer to home than he dares let anyone realize...
My Review: A free story that had good world building and an interesting plot. Could have done with a lot more story. Hope the author writes more from this couple.

Review Of Konnor and His Omega Mate (Love Slave of the Alphas #3) by Shannon West 4*
BLURB: Ethan is having a really bad day. First he’s required by Lycan law to appear before a judging panel consisting of big, important alphas who intimidate him and make him so nervous he’s afraid he won’t be able to perform at all. He’s desperate to prove himself a worthy gamma, so he can get an apprenticeship, and start his new life. When he walks into the room he finds Konnor Balenscu, a handsome, important Lycan alpha, who also happens to be his mate. Ethan is incredibly drawn to him and is amazed to learn that Konnor returns his interest. There’s only one hitch—Konnor finds him to be a lowly omega, deemed mentally defective by the proud Lycans, and doomed to live his life as a love slave, sold to the highest bidder. He only has one option left. He has to run.
My Review: I haven't read any of the previous ones in this series but it didn't make too much difference as each story is about a different couple and the world building is pretty good so I knew what the background was. I enjoyed the misunderstandings and mishaps the two main characters encounter on their way to a happy ending and if I ever want another short, enjoyable read I will look for others from this series.

Review Of Fate Drops In by K.C. Grim 3*
BLURB: Werewolves and vampires have always been sworn enemies. They have fought battles and raged wars to keep their kinds apart for centuries, but that all changes one night when a young wolf named Connor accidently drops into a room full of unexpected vampires.
A young wolf living on his own in the city would be easy prey for a group of angry vampires. They are older and stronger than the werewolf, but Connor isn’t ready to give up without a fight. Can he face them alone, or will he find an ally in the most unusual place?
Davis has lived hundreds of years in the shadow of darkness, but what good is eternity if you spend it alone? With nothing left to live for, the older vampire is losing his desire for life when Connor comes crashing into his world. Is the handsome, scrappy werewolf worth saving if it costs Davis his immortal soul? Or will saving this young wolf end up saving them both?

My Review: This was another short read but it was rather well written and gave a fair amount of background for so few words. The romance between Connor and Davis felt a bit rushed but was sweet despite that and the meeting the family bit was rather amusing. Overall I think I will be on the look out for more by this author.

Review Of Break Out (Hidden Talents, #5)by Claire Cray 5*
BLURB: The Talents have made it to Los Angeles, but it's more Wild West than California Dreams. Ken starts to struggle with his Talent, but his growing pains are forgotten during a balmy night on the town that leaves Jin with a bad taste in his mouth. Meanwhile, Sky's come a long way with Mark's support, and Aki feels better, too. But will it last when a certain troubled Talent makes a dramatic comeback?
My Review:Jin, Ken and Sky return in this fifth episode of Hidden Talents and I enjoyed every word. My only complaint was the long wait for it to be available to read and the shortness of the story overall.

Review Of Squad 19 - Prequel Volume 1 (The Tisaian Chronicles)by Nicholas Sansbury Smith 4*
BLURB: Squad 19 is a thrilling post-apocalyptic short story and prequel #1 to the novel - The Biomass Revolution.
Welcome to Tisaia – The last hub of modern civilization in a world left scorched by the nuclear fires of the Biomass Wars. Surrounded by a fortress of steel walls and protected by a fierce and loyal Council of Royal Knights, Tisaia seems relatively safe to the average State worker and citizen. A plentiful supply of Biomass powers the cities and food is abundant, but security has come at a terrible cost. The State will do anything to protect its resources, even if it means suppressing the rights of its citizens and deporting immigrants into the Wasteland - a virtual death sentence.
Sasa is one of the young immigrants left for dead outside the safety of the Tisaian steel walls. It is only by a dash of luck the rebels find her. They bring her back to Camp Salvation where she is put to work as a technician, working to purify the camps water in the rain gardens. But more than anything she wishes to fight.
Obi Hepe is the commander of infamous rebel group known as Squad 19. After meeting Sasa he is faced with a tough decision; teach her to fight and risk seeing her killed like so many others, or risk having her run away. With the Royal Knights hunting his squad deeper into The Wastelands, Obi realizes he may not have a choice. He is going to need every gun he can get in a final battle for Camp Salvation.

My Review: Very short and full of action. A nice introduction to the world of The Biomass Revolution. It tells the story from the viewpoint of the Squad's leader and is mostly his introspective thoughts whilst on a dangerous run back to the camp. If you haven't read any of the series it won't matter at all as the relevant information is given.

Plus a bunch of reads that only warranted 1* for various reasons like no proper story or felt like I'd been dumped into the story halfway through with no explanations. Also some of them were badly written too.

Incubus Master: Captured 1 (Incubus Master: Captured #1)by Yamila Abraham, Barbara Apostolico (this was the one that felt like I was dumped halfway into the story!)(Illustrator)

The Vengeance of the Forsaken Soldier by Alexander Wilder (Just not for me nothing wrong with it per se)

Broken In: The Railroad Boi #1 by Alec Taylor (This had no proper story for me)

and two that were so badly written I can't even remember the titles now!

Review of Bottom's Up by Amanda Young 3*
BLURB: For the first time ever, get all three of Amanda Young’s best selling Bottom’s Up stories in one bundle. Come on in to the bar, where the cocktails are sweet and the men are spicy.
In A KINKY ORGASM, you’ll meet bar owner Briar Henley, who can’t believe his good fortune when his old high school crush strolls into his little bar and orders the house specialty – a kinky orgasm. Yearning for a little payback of the intimate persuasion, Briar sees nothing wrong with fulfilling an old fantasy and finding out why the most popular jock from high school is suddenly eyeing him like a juicy steak.
Get to know Caleb and Zaki in TRIPLESEX, where the two discontent lover’s are supposed to meet for a drink and wind up sharing much more than their favorite cocktails.
SCREWED catches up with Max, whose life is in upheaval after a series of racy photos appeared online. On his last night in town, Max visits his favorite local bar in a last-ditch attempt to reach out to his deeply closeted lover. One way or the other, Max plans to depart in the morning—with or without the love of his life

My Review: A quick enjoyable read with some lovely sex scenes and sweet romance. I liked the way the titles were both indicative of the story and also a cocktail that one of the main characters drank.

Review of Silence (Dire Wolves)by Lena Austin 3*
BLURB: "One funeral wasn't enough for you?" said the kidnapper's note...
Deafened in an attempted murder, Detective Cameron Douglas is involuntarily retired from the force, despite his willingness to continue with the investigation of the murder of the mayor's secretary. Now, it's personal. ENT therapist Noel Miller is a vampire with a few scars of his own. He wants to be more than Cam's interpreter and instructor in deaf culture. He could help Cam, if only the werewolf will let him into his life and heart.
Then the murderer strikes again. Right at Cam.

My Review: I love Vampire and Shifter stories and this was fairly good for such a short one. It had some lovely humour and a fair bit of action. My only complaint is that it was too short and didn't really flesh out the world as much as it could have.

Review of Bonds of Fire by Sophie Duncan

Bonds of Fire by Sophie Duncan 4*
BLURB: Drekken is a dragon warrior. Bonded to his dragon, Miri, together they lead a squadron of fliers. His fliers respect him, his enemies fear him, his reputation precedes him. Yet, nothing in his life could have prepared Drekken for his greatest challenge: babysitting.
Stranded after a deadly battle, separated from his squadron and Miri, Drekken finds himself the only hope for two young empaths and their nursery group of hatchlings. He must lead them all to safety and, along the way, discover some truths about himself.

My Review: I wish this had been a longer story as it had all the elements of a great novel. Solid characters and storyline as well as plenty of good world building and backstory for it's length. My only other complaint is that a romance was hinted at but never actually came to fruition by the end of the story. Hopefully the author will write a continuation and give the reader more of the romance and this really intriguing world.

Review of Shoot The Humans First

Shoot the Humans First by Becky Black 4*
BLURB: On Earth, everyone is a soldier. Like all humans Jadeth was trained from birth to kill. Humans are the best soldiers in the galaxy and they fight for whoever pays the most. With no family, no country, no tribe, their lives and their loyalty belong to High Command. But when Jadeth meets Ilyan, a man they call The Prophet, he learns he’s been lied to all his life.
Brilliant intelligence analyst, Ilyan, is certain humanity and Earth itself is in imminent danger. High Command refuses to believe it, forcing Ilyan to go on the run, desperate to spread the truth. If he can’t make High Command believe in the threat, then he will take his message to the soldiers on the ground.
Infantryman Jadeth is one of those soldiers. He doesn’t know if it’s accident or fate that has brought him to Ilyan, but he knows he has only one mission now. He must protect Ilyan and his small band of followers as they travel through hostile territory, spreading the truth. High Command has betrayed humanity, and Jadeth has nothing left to believe in—except The Prophet. Ilyan is determined to reach Earth’s mercenary army, scattered across the galaxy fighting other people’s wars. His new guardian Jadeth must keep him safe from agents of High Command determined to silence him. If Jadeth fails he will have nothing left. If that happens Earth will have to learn how far a man can go when everything he believed in is lost.

My Review: An interesting concept for this story and I enjoyed reading it, even though it was a little bit 'bromancey' for a Science Fiction story. I was totally surprised at the ending as it wasn't quite what I expected it to be, yet somehow, after the fact, it made a lot of sense to me too. If you enjoy good Characters, an action and intrigue story with surprise endings then this is for you.

I was hooked and, after reluctantly returning my copy to the library, I went out and bought everything I could from her. I continued my love affair with this brilliant writer until the day she died. Review of Kei's Gift by Ann Somerville

Kei's Gift (Darshian Tales #1)by Ann Somerville 5*
BLURB:Darshian is a vast land, inhabited by a peaceful, rational society where people with extraordinary Gifts are common, and life is lived according to strong ethical principles. Kuprij is made up of a thousand crowded islands – thrusting, ambitious, war-like, driven by a booming population and a desire to bring its religion and its laws to the whole world. Twenty years ago, it conquered south Darshian, now it has greedy eyes on the north. The war brings Kei, a gentle, fun-loving healer from an isolated village, into collision with Arman, an embittered, honourable general, a man trapped in a loveless marriage and joylessly wedded to duty. The fate of two nations will rest on these two men–and somehow they must not only learn to overcome their own personal difficulties, but bring peace with honour to their countries. If they fail...many innocents will die.
My Review: One Word- Epic! Both in scope and in length. This story had me from page one and kept me reading about Kei and Arman and the way they grew, learned and overcame all sorts of troubles to come out better on the other side. It had me laughing at snarky comments, crying at loss and pain and smiling at romances and happy scenes. It was a story with twists and turns and raw hate and deep love and I was sorry to get to the end as I felt so deeply involved with all the characters in it.

Reviewing Delilah Devlin's Stroke 2.

Review of Strokes 2 by Delilah Devlin 5*
BLURB: From National Bestselling Author, Delilah Devlin, comes another naughty collection of seven bedtime stories—a week’s worth of nighttime reading pleasure.
Ride along with two soldiers, just returned from war, who find sweet release in “The Long Ride Home.” In “Tailgating at the Cedar Inn,” a woman has one last fling with two sexy construction workers. A cowboy kidnaps his “Runaway Bride” to get some sweet satisfaction. A woman travelling alone in Europe enjoys a hot steamy sauna in the “Textile Free” zone. In “Love in Bloom,” a florist tempts her high school crush. A naughty nooner with an office colleague ends in a “Quick Draw.” A dispatcher kicks inhibitions to the door when she seduces a younger truck driver in “Drive Me Crazy.”
Four of the stories have appeared in separate Cleis Press anthologies. Two of the stories were featured in Penthouse magazine! All the stories are featured in one sinfully hot collection…

My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Author in exchange for an honest review. In her foreword Delilah states that this book is a week's worth of naughty tales! Let me tell you - I am a greedy reader and read it in one sitting! The stories are full of sassy women and horny, sexy guys, rounded off with raunchy sex scenes that blaze off the pages. If you like Delilah's writings you will want to read this one, just make sure you have something (or someone) ready to help cool yourself off.

Review of After the Ending by Lindsey Fairleigh & Lindsey Pogue

Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley
After The Ending (The Ending #1)by Lindsey Fairleigh & Lindsey Pogue 4*
BLURB: The first book in a new Post-apocalyptic Romance series.
The Virus spread. Billions died. The Ending began. We may have survived the apocalypse, but the Virus changed us.
When people started getting sick, “they” thought it was just the flu. My roommate, my boyfriend, my family… they're all gone now. I got sick too. I should have died with them—with the rest of the world—but I didn’t. I thought witnessing the human population almost disappear off the face of the earth was the craziest thing I'd ever experience. I was so wrong. My name is Dani O’Connor, I'm twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.
The Virus changed everything. The world I knew is gone, and life is backwards. We've all had to start over. I’ve been stripped of my home, my dreams…all that is me. I'm someone else now—broken and changed. Other survivors’ memories and emotions haunt me. They invade my mind until I can no longer separate them from my own. I won't let them consume me. I can’t. My name is Zoe Cartwright, I’m twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.
We've been inseparable for most of our lives, and now our friendship is all we have left. The aftermath of the Virus has stranded us on opposite sides of the United States. Trusting strangers, making sacrifices, killing—we’ll do anything to reach one another. Fear and pain may be unavoidable, but we're strong…we're survivors. But to continue surviving in this unfamiliar world plagued by Crazies and strange new abilities, we have to adapt. We have to evolve. And more than anything, we have to find each other.

My Review: I really liked this story and the way it followed the main two characters and their interactions via email. I've read post apocalypse stories that have dwelt overly long on the fall of humanity, and I've read others that try to emphasize the ability of humanity to conquer all, but this one was so much better than that. It focused on the way most people would feel which is bewildered and scared and generally a little paranoid. Especially as they learn about their abilities and how to use them. In fact this would have got a 5* if not for my pet hate of a cliffhanger ending - though I have to admit it was a great way to make me want to read book two!!

Review of Let's Hear It For The Boy by T A Webb

Let's Hear it for the Boy by T.A. Webb 5*
BLURB: Auntie Social is the biggest, baddest drag queen in Atlanta—she knows what she wants and she gets it. She’s tough, merciless, and top dog. That’s what Paul Stewart, reporter for the Journal, had heard, and all he expects when he’s assigned to interview the legend.. But nobody really knows the person behind the make-up.
What if…what if the person behind the sarcasm and music was more than just a man in a dress? What happened in his life that, thirty years later, made him a successful CEO, a philanthropist, and a legend in the gay community? Thirty years and almost a million dollars raised for people living with HIV/AIDs, yet still no one knows the real story.
Until one night, one man breaks through the shell, and Matthew Trammell—Auntie Social—opens the door he closed many years ago and lets his secrets spill out.
Pain is like rain, it covers your skin and soaks in bone-deep, but it eventually recedes and allows fresh things to grow

My Review: I loved this book. Auntie Social is a great character, but the man behind her is even better. He is vulnerable and sincere and in so much pain at the loss of his true love through AIDS. He is inspiring in the way he uses that loss to raise awareness and funds to fight a disease that is still around today - reminding the reader through the story that this is so. I wept as he told his story and I felt a glimmer of hope at the end when the journalist admits to his own loss and they feel a need to look for renewal together. T A Webb deserves the 5* for making me feel so much and think about what the gay community still live with every day.

Review Of Blue Hearts Of Mars by Nicole Grotepas

Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas 5*
BLURB: Seventeen-year-old Retta Heikkinen is in love with a boy--a thoroughly gorgeous, captivating, and mysterious boy known as Hemingway. The situation is rather ideal: he likes her, she likes him. There's just one little problem.
He's a blue heart, an android.
Being in a relationship is its own complicated mess, but how long can a forbidden love last? Soon Retta discovers a secret that could destroy the uneasy truce between the blue hearts and humans, which makes life under the domes on Mars possible. Would exposing what she knows make things better or worse? And how can she know for certain without exposing the secret?

My Review: Fast paced, action packed, romantic are just some of the words that spring to mind when I try to define this book. The Heroine is quirky, serious and resolute and stands up for what she believes in. The Hero was different and was treated as such. This made me think of the way people discriminate against Gays today and I wondered if the author was trying to get a message across to the YAs who will mostly read her book. If she was then she chose a wonderful story to tell it in. If you like narrative that makes you think about people being people than this is for you. If you just like escapist Science Fiction with a lovely romance then this is for you too. Personally I think anyone who enjoys a good read will enjoy this on some level.

Review Of Despite Himself by Kayleigh Patchett

Despite Himself (Despite Himself #1)by Kayleigh Patchett 5*
BLURB: Logan is a loner. Abused by his father and his brother, he finds safe refuge in an unexpected person. As that refuge turns into something more Logan must deal with resistance from all sides. Is just wanting to be loved too much to ask for? Please note, this book contains scenes of an adult m/m nature.
My Review:At first I was a little surprised at this book because it was all first person, present tense, with frequent changes of POV. I haven't come across it very often but with this story it worked really well and the story really flowed. Logan came across as a very sensitive and artistic guy who has been bullied by his father and big brother all his life. This is graphically described at times (but is no more than fists etc.) so if you don't like to read about violence of a domestic nature this one might not be for you. Logan's refuge is a very determined guy who is gentle and cares for Logan and the contrast (especially as given through the POV changes) is very intense. I was moved to tears towards the end, and as I have mentioned in previous reviews, an author who can move me like that deserves to get a 5*

Review Of Black Dog Blues by Rhys Ford

Review Of Black Dog Blues (Kai Gracen #1)by Rhys Ford 5*
BLURB Ever since he’d been part of the pot in a high-stakes poker game, elfin outcast Kai Gracen figured he’d used up any good karma he had when Dempsey, a human Stalker, won the hand and took him in. Following the violent merge of Earth and Underhill, the human and elfin races were left with a messy, monster-ridden world and Stalkers were often the only cavalry willing to ride to someone’s rescue when something shadowy and dark moved into the neighbourhood.
There certainly were no shortage of monsters or people stupidly willing to become lunch for one.
It was a hard life but one Kai liked. And he was good at it. Killing monsters was easy. Especially since he was one himself.
After an accident retired Dempsey out, Kai set up permanent shop in San Diego, contracting out to the local SoCalGov depot. It was a decent life, filled with bounty, a few friends and most importantly, no other elfin around to remind him he wasn’t really human.
That was until a sidhe lord named Ryder arrives in San Diego and Kai is conscripted to do a job for Ryder’s fledgling Dawn Court. It was supposed to a simple run; head up the coast during dragon-mating season to retrieve a pregnant human woman seeking sanctuary with the new Court then back to San Diego. Easy, quick and best of all, profitable. But Ryder’s “simple” run leads to massive trouble and Kai ends up being caught in the middle of a deadly bloodline feud he has no hope of escaping.
No one ever got rich by being a Stalker. But then hardly any of them got old either. The way things were looking, it didn’t look like Kai was going to be the exception.

My Review My first thought on this book was - I wish this was a movie. It had me figuratively on the edge of my seat from the first page and didn't let up on the action throughout! The Characters were all well rounded and believable (even when they got mangled almost beyond belief) and the twists and turns kept me glued to the pages. I was very glad to know that this was book one as I can't wait to read more about Kai and his world. If you like action packed Fantasy with lots of elvish intrigue and even more fighting of really dangerous monsters then this is the one to read.

Review of Stone Guardian by Danielle Monsch

Review Of Stone Guardian (Entwined Realms #1) by Danielle Monsch 5*
BLURB: Gryphons flying past skyscrapers? Wizards battling it out in coffee houses? Women riding motorcycles with large swords strapped to their backs? All normal sights since the Great Collision happened twenty-six years ago.
Well, not normal for everyone. Larissa Miller may have been born after the Great Collision, but as a history teacher who lives in the human-only city, she has never come into contact with any other race or species, nor has she wanted to. Her life is as ordinary as it gets - that is, until one day she walks out of her apartment and is attacked by a mob of Zombies, only to be saved by a Gargoyle.
Gargoyles trust no one outside their Clan, but due to a cryptic prophecy, Terak, Leader of the Gargoyles, has been watching over the human woman for months. While he can find no reason why the woman has been singled out, something about her stirs every protective instinct within him. When the attack confirms that the threats against her exist and are real, he convinces Larissa that though their races have never been allies, the best chance of discovering why she has been brought into his world is by working together.
In the course of their investigation Terak becomes entranced by his little human. But when he discovers why Necromancers want her and the great reward that awaits him if he betrays her, he must choose between the welfare of his Clan and not only Larissa’s life, but the fate of this New Realm as well.

My Review:Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley A wonderful start to what looks like a great new series by Danielle Monsch. I loved the action and the romance, which were well balanced and gave a very satisfying read. The main characters were really good, but also the secondary characters were well developed and interesting so that I just know I will enjoy more stories from The Entwined Realms. The back story on how the realms got entwined and what it means for the ordinary human was added without detracting or info dumping which was wonderful. I have read Gargoyles as heroes in other books but I liked that Danielle put her own twist on the mythology of them as well as on all the other supernatural and magical beings that inhabit this new series. I look forward to reading book two next year!

Review of Deceptive Attraction by Tara Lain

Review of Deceptive Attraction (Genetic Attraction #3)by Tara Lain 5*
BLURB: Caleb Martin faces a life crisis -- and he’s pretty embarrassed about it. A talented soccer star, he has the chance to sign a lucrative five year contract and be rich and famous. Two problems -- Cal is gay and signing the contract means he has to stay in the closet, maybe for life. Plus, he’ll have to spend his years diving for soccer balls when he’d like to be helping people like the rest of his family. A one-night stand with a beautiful man rocks Cal, but the guy vanishes only to reappear where Cal is house-sitting. Too much coincidence? And then a cute tomboy throws Cal’s life choices into confusion. How could he wind up with a commitment phobe and a woman dedicated to her work in Africa? Oh yeah, and then there’s a big surprise in a snowstorm. Cosmic joker strikes again.(
My Review:Having read many Tara Lain books in the past I was delighted to have won this one even though I had not read the previous books in the series. That said I had no problems getting straight into the story. I loved Caleb and the way he was so confused over the two love interests in his life. Tara Lain has a way of making a menage seem normal and interesting enough that I feel deprived at only having one man in my life :D Angel and Eli came close seconds to Caleb as my favourite characters in the book but I also loved the protagonist as he was depicted in such a way that you just knew he would get his comeuppance in the end.

Couple of reviews

Review Of Wolf Protector (Federal Paranormal Unit #1)by Milly Taiden 4*
BLURB: A woman with a secret…
The Federal Paranormal Unit is an elite squad of supernaturals dedicated to solving missing persons cases. Erica’s gift allows her a special connection with the crime, but it comes at a deep personal cost… Until now, she’s kept her gift a secret, even from the other members of the team. But this case will throw her together with Agent Trent Buchanan. He’s the object of her secret desires, but he’s also a cocky womanizer. She’d rather swim in shark-infested waters with a paper cut than admit she has feelings for him.
A man with one desire…
Wolf Shifter Trent wants Erica more than he’s ever wanted any woman. He’s spent years patiently waiting for her to admit that she wants him too. Working one-on-one in a race to find a serial killer, Trent’s patience and Erica’s resolve wear thin. When Trent discovers the truth about Erica, will he accept her for who she is? And can he protect her from the horrors that her gift brings?
A case that pushes them to the edge…
Erica will have to risk it all if she wants to stop the killer, and when she does, Trent may have to put his own life on the line to make sure his mate is protected

My Review:I loved the suspense in this story but it didn't detract any from the quite hot romance between Erica and Trent. The story was full of action and was sexy too. Overall I am sure I will be on the lookout for more from this new series. Especially if the author produces more of the same suspense in future stories

Review Of Twin Effect by Ann Somerville 4*
BLURB: Dylan Gallaher is a biomechanical engineer specialising in artificial limbs - something in which he has a personal interest after losing his right hand in a motorbike accident years ago. He has a great career, a new job, and wonderful opportunities. But he's also lonely and feeling disconnected from his loved ones in a new town.
That's why when Max Symonds crashes into his life, Dylan welcomes the distraction. Max is fun loving, artistic and devoted to his twin brother, Toby. He thinks Dylan is attractive, and Dylan finds it hard to resist his persistent advances.
But Max is unaware of the dark secret behind his relationship with his brother, and Dylan must help them accommodate a strange new reality, while trying not to lose his heart in the process.

My Review: A very unusual theme to this story and at first I wasn't sure about it at all, especially when the dark secret came out (not putting what it is because I won't spoil it for others) but suffice to say I really liked the solution the author came up with. I liked that the theme of grief and loss was so well handled within the story and will be reading more from this author sooner or later as she writes in a style that I find easy to lose myself in.
