Review of The Melody Thief by Shira Anthony

The Melody Thief (Blue Notes #2)by Shira Anthony 5*
BLURB: Cary Redding is a walking contradiction. On the surface he’s a renowned cellist, sought after by conductors the world over. Underneath, he’s a troubled man flirting with addictions to alcohol and anonymous sex. The reason for the discord? Cary knows he’s a liar, a cheat. He's the melody thief.
Cary manages his double life just fine until he gets mugged on a deserted Milan street. Things look grim until handsome lawyer Antonio Bianchi steps in and saves his life. When Antonio offers something foreign to Cary — romance — Cary doesn't know what to do. But then things get even more complicated. For one thing, Antonio has a six-year-old son. For another, Cary has to confess about his alter ego and hope Antonio forgives him.
Just when Cary thinks he's figured it all out, past and present collide and he is forced to choose between the family he wanted as a boy and the one he has come to love as a man.
Note: The Blue Notes Series can be read in any order. Each is a stand-alone story from the same classical music universe.

My Review: This was my first Blue Notes story but it won't be my last. Shira Anthony wrote a wonderful contemporary romance that had me eagerly reading to find out more about both the main characters. It even had me in love with little Massi (the six yr old son) which is rare for me having had 5 of my own to contend with over the years :D What I liked most though, was that it didn't do the instantly get together and everything turns up roses, instead it showed how a relationship needs to be constantly worked at to keep that happy ending. Something else I truly know from my 37 years together with the father of the 5 children. The final bit that sealed the deal for me and turned this into a truly good book was that the truth about how much hard work goes into achieving success in any field but especially that of a good classical musician wasn't ignored.

Review of Ripped by Shelly Dickson Carr

Ripped: A Jack the Ripper Time-Travel Thriller by Shelly Dickson Carr DNF
BLURB: Katie Lennox wishes her parents were still alive. Having to leave Boston to live with Grandma Cleaves in London was hard, but she's making new friends, working on her British accent and even learning some Cockney rhyming slang. London's cool and actually feels like home in some ways, like she's been here before, belongs here. When a museum visit with her cousin and his cute friend turns funky, Katie finds herself in a long, uncomfortable dress, wearing a ridiculous hat, wondering what happened to her jeans and high-top sneakers? And where's her iPhone?... It's London, 1888. Smart and gutsy, Katie knows she's here to stop Jack the Ripper. The serial killer didn't just slash his victims' throats; he butchered the women. Katie has read about the Ripper, knows the names of his victims and where and when they were killed. She's watched her fair share of CSI. Can Katie save their lives?
My Review: DNF but thank you to Netgalley for a digital advance copy.

If you can get past the over use of Cockney Slang, the awful stereotypical character of the 'boyfriend' and the equally over used plot cliche of dead parents, this might have been a good story. Shelly Dickson Carr (or maybe Michael Karol the name it's copyrighted to)seems to have written a book that was an excuse to show off her(or his) knowledge of the Jack The Ripper history and the rather large amount of Cockney slang in her(his) linguistic basket. The sister is mentioned often to start but, at the point of the book that I gave up, had still not made an actual appearance, so I have no idea why, unless it was just to point out the obvious resemblance to an ancestor who is a victim of Jack's. I personally will not be trying to read this book again at a later date.

Reviewing Loving A Prince Charming

Review Of Loving a Prince Charming (Fairy Tales & Ever Afters, #3) 4*
BLURB: Honor and Integrity were more than words to Seth - they were the values he lived his life by. As Prince of a large kingdom, putting duty before desire was vital for the prosperity and wellness of his people. If sometimes he looked at Kira – best friend since childhood and his personal guard – and regretted his betrothal to the Princess of a neighboring kingdom, well, that was the price he had to pay for his people’s happiness.
Even if that Princess was cursed and given the nickname Sleeping Beauty.
Seth discovers the way to end the curse and, against his father’s wishes, sets off on a perilous journey to free her with Kira by his side. But Kira represents a different type of danger… Only love can break the curse, but how can Seth keep his promise to protect Sleeping Beauty when every moment with Kira makes his heart damn duty and demand its desire

My Review: Another wonderfully modern twist on an old fairy tale by Danielle Monsch. This time it's Sleeping Beauty but don't expect anything like the original in this delightful story. The curse isn't placed by a disgruntled fairy but by The Elf King and the lovely deviations on the original just continue from there. I am looking to buy some more of this series as soon as funds allow (having read two great stories already).

Review Of In Fury Born

Review of In Fury Born by David Weber 5* (reread)
BLURB: Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the Empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And of course the pirates want her dead, too. But Alicia DeVries has two allies nobody knows about, allies as implacable as she is: a self-aware computer, and a creature from the mists of Old Earth's most ancient legends. And this trio of furies won't rest until vengeance is served.
In Fury Born is a greatly expanded new version of David Weber's popular novel Path of the Fury, which has gone through six large printings in its original mass market edition. David Weber has added considerable new material, revealing the earlier life of Alicia DeVries before she embarked on her mission of vengeance, and illuminating the universe of the original story. The result is a novel with almost twice the wordage of the original, and a must-buy for all David Weber fans.

My Review I love books by David Weber and this one is no exception and I reread it to get myself out of a reading slump. It's a wonderful story and the feisty heroine had me rooting for her all the way through. I even found myself cheering for a computer and a mythological Fury!

Review of The Raven's Warrior by Vincent Pratchett

The Raven's Warrior by Vincent Pratchett 5*
BLURB: If Death takes a man it is called fate, when Death leaves a man it is called destiny. Wounded in battle (900 A. D.), a near dead Celtic warrior is taken by Viken raiders and sold into a Baghdad slave market. He is dragged further East, through the desert, into the Middle Kingdom where he is bought by a Taoist Priest and his beautiful daughter. Hazy images of silk, herbs, needles, potions and steel, can only lead to one thing, he has been purchased by a wizard and his witch. Arkthar fears for his soul. Death finds Arkthar's predicament interesting. I have heard the delirious ramblings of countless dying minds. I am amused by yours. Don't be afraid, I won't take you now. Your life sentence has just begun. Arkthar s owners become his teachers and then his companions. The priest wizard and his witch daughter heal and teach Arkthar their Eastern ways of medicine, science, war and philosophy. Under the watchful eye of death, this journey unfolds, as a slave becomes a king, and new root of Arthurian legend takes hold.
My Review: This was a review copy from YMAA Publication Center, Inc. via NetGalley I have always love the Arthurian Legends and delight in finding variations on it, but this one just blew my mind. It was such a wonderful read and held so much of Eastern mysticism that it gave the story a whole new outlook. Having spent some years in Hong Kong when young I learned a lot about Chinese theocracy and the use of it here was a lovely addition to the Arthurian legends I grew up with. The fighting, politics and medical information was given in such a way that I was never bored by it and the storyline was well executed. For a debut novel this was really good and I look forward to seeing Vincent Pratchett's name on another book soon.

Review of The Awakening of Amanra

The Awakening of Amanra by Lexi Ander 4*
BLURB: Every five generations twelve Strong Arms will rise to protect four sacred and powerful Guardians. General Rehn Ismene is meant to be a Strong Arm to Prince Kaj. Vestiges of a wrongful war and time spent in enemy hands have made Rehn doubt his abilities until word reaches him that the prince has been captured. Will Rehn arrive in time to free Prince Kaj or will he lose the man he loves to the very enemy who attempted to break him?
My Review: A short but very intense read. There was plenty of background and some very emotional scenes in just a few pages. This seems like the start of something longer so I am hoping for more set in this universe by the author.

Review of Time Dancer by Inez Kelley

Time Dancer (Eldwyn Chronicles #3)by Inez Kelley 5*
BLURB: Everyone has a duty in the royal castle—everyone except Jana Haruk. Despite her promising magical bloodline, her gift is weak. As a Reminiscent Seer, she knows only what happened in the past, not what will happen in the future. When the crown prince's life is threatened, Jana vows to do everything she can to help him—including asking the queen, a powerful sorceress, to lend her some magic.
The queen summons Darach, a spell in human form. The arrogant and mysterious man soon discovers there's more to Jana than meets the eye: she's a time dancer, someone with the ability to move backward through time in her dreams. With Darach as her anchor, Jana can explore the past and try to figure out who is behind the attacks on the prince.
Despite her attraction to him, Jana knows little about the handsome warrior. The past is tying them closer to each other with every trip, but Darach is bound to return to his homeland when his mission is complete…and their time together is running out

My Review: Yesterday I mentioned that the mark of a good author was one that can move you to tears with the power of her words. Today I have to add Time Dancer by Inez Kelley to the list of books that I have wept over. If you haven't read any of the Eldwyn Chronicles yet don't worry. There is enough back story given that you can read this book as is, though obviously it is much better, as far as knowing other characters is concerned, to have read the first two before this. Time Dancer is a complex and magical read that you just have to experience for yourself. If you love Fantasy and romance and magic then this is the one for you.

Review of Demons and Lullabies

Demons and Lullabies (The Demons Age #2)by Kallysten 5*
BLURB: Some little boys want to be firemen or astronauts when they grow up. From the moment Jacob understood what his fathers did, he never wanted to do anything but fight demons.
Andrew, Jacob’s father and a vampire, fights demons because it’s a necessity: few others have the strength or skill to kill the strange creatures that started appearing the very night his son was born. He carries with him some guilt, too, and the suspicion that the magic that made Jacob’s very life possible also opened the way for the demons. The last thing he wants is for his son to ever join this fight and get hurt.
As the years pass, however, and Andrew watches Jacob grow up and grow more determined, he slowly has to accept there’s little he can do to deter his son. It doesn’t help that Nicholas, Jacob’s other dad and Andrew’s Childe, starts giving Jacob sword-fighting lessons under the cover of playing, or that Jacob discovers his mother’s diaries and comes to the same conclusion Andrew did concerning his origins and the demons’.
Through snapshots covering Jacob’s life from birth to adulthood, watch all three members of this unusual family change, grow up, and find their place in the world.

My Review: The mark of a good author is to move a person to tears when reading their work. With this wonderful collection of vignettes, following Jacob and his Fathers during his growing up years, Kallysten hit that mark. I read the first in this series a while ago now, and was delighted to revisit the family, and Kallysten did not disappoint me as she dragged me into their world. I really love Andrew, Nicholas and Jacob and was delighted to find out that Kallysten is busy writing a follow up story about Jacob as a grown up.

From Ender's World and beyond.

Ender's World: Fresh Perspectives on the SF Classic Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card 5*
BLURB: Experience the thrill of reading Ender's Game all over again.
Go deeper into the complexities of Orson Scott Card’s classic novel with science fiction and fantasy writers, YA authors, military strategists, including:
Ender prequel series coauthor Aaron Johnston on Ender and the evolution of the child hero.
Burn Notice creator Matt Nix on Ender's Game as a guide to life.
Hugo award winning writer Mary Robinette Kowal on how Ender’s Game gets away with breaking all the (literary) rules.
Retired US Air Force Colonel Tom Ruby on what the military could learn from Ender about leadership.
Bestselling YA author Neal Shusterman on the ambivalence toward survival that lies at the heart of Ender’s story.
Plus pieces by:
Hilari Bell
John Brown
Mette Ivie Harrison
Janis Ian
Alethea Kontis
David Lubar and Alison S. Myers
John F. Schmitt
Ken Scholes
Eric James Stone
Also includes never-before-seen content from Orson Scott Card on the writing and evolution of the events in Ender's Game, from the design of Battle School to the mindset of the pilots who sacrificed themselves in humanity’s fight against the formics

My Review: If you've ever been intrigued about what went into the creation of Ender Wiggin's universe or wondered what other fans of the story think about it, or maybe just want to know more about the universe from the perspective of people in the know, then you need to read this anthology. It is full of insightful and interesting opinions on all aspects of Ender Wiggin's Universe from how it teaches leadership to how it compares to today's attitude towards children and Teens. I enjoyed every single bit and was delighted with the question and answer sections where Orson Scott Card answered many questions from the other writers that I would have loved to have asked him myself. So, even though I don't read non-fiction that often (especially not essay type stuff) this one is a very definite reread book on my shelf from now on.

More reviews

The Naughty Boy (Boy #1.5)by Lisa Henry & J.A. Rock 4*
BLURB Brin and his Dom, Ferg, have enjoyed a fun, sexy domestic discipline relationship for years. Brin knows his role—flamboyant, fabulous brat—and Ferg knows it's his job to play the big bad Dom, giving Brin the punishment he desperately craves. When Brin is tasked with dressing his new friend Lane Moredock for a date with Brin's ex, Derek, he's excited—fashion is what he knows best, and Lane is going to look stunning.
But what should be a fun afternoon takes a serious turn when Brin sees that Lane has been injured, and Lane's reluctance to tell Brin the truth about it makes Brin start to question who he is, why things didn't work with Derek, and what people really think of him. Is he just a flittery, glittery fashion fairy? Or does he mean something more to the people he loves? And can he find a way to bring these doubts up with Ferg—or is Ferg going to have to Top his way to the bottom of this?

My Review: I loved Brin and his faster than a bullet thoughts and the way he spoke them without any filters. He was a wonderful character, that on the surface is all bling and no substance, but inside he was totally selfless, generous and kind. The kind of man anyone would be glad to call friend. I also enjoyed the way the writers had him learn that those who love him understand him better than he does himself.

A Shimmer of Angels (Angel Sight #1)by Lisa M. Basso
4*
BLURB: Sixteen-year-old Rayna sees angels, and has the medication and weekly therapy sessions to prove it. Now, in remission, Rayna starts fresh at a new school, lands a new job, and desperately tries for normalcy. She ignores signs that she may be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of. But these days, it’s more than just hallucinations that keep Rayna up at night. Students are dying, and she may be the only one who can stop it. Can she keep her job, her sanity, and her friends from dying at the hands of angels she can't admit to seeing?
My Review: Some Angel stories are just an excuse to do some bible thumping but this one was so much more than that. For starters there wasn't that much about religion in it at all. In fact it was more like a very well written suspense romance for YA. The suspense comes from the suicides that Ray is trying to solve and the romance comes from the two very different Angels that seem to be very interested in her. I am going to add the next book to my to buy list so that I can find out what happens to the three main characters next.

Empty Space (Light #3)by M. John Harrison DNF
BLURB: We thought we had filled space with a civilization spread across the stars, held together by ships that warped reality.
But there is a lot of empty space in the universe.
The impossible empty space beneath a corpse floating in a dank, future alley way.
The vast empty space inside every atom.
The aching empty space between a mother and a daughter in a quiet west London suburb.
The empty space of the Kefahuchi Tract, hanging above us, seething with strangeness and charm.
And the empty space inside us. Somewhere to go. Somewhere to come back from.
Somewhere haunted.

My Review: I don't know if it's because I hadn't read the previous books or because it truly is a really weird book, but I just couldn't stick with it. The first 50 pages seemed to jump from one thing to another with no rhyme nor reason and after that I just gave up.

Review of Organic Chemistry by Andrew Grey

Organic Chemistry by Andrew Grey 5*
BLURB: Brendon Marcus lives for his work. A boy genius who fast-tracked his way to college professor by his early twenties, he doesn’t know any other way to be. People confound him. So when Josh Horton, the assistant football coach, pursues him, Brendon isn’t sure what to make of him.
Josh has his own problems. His successful parents aren’t particularly happy with his career path, and some of the players don’t like having a gay assistant coach. He begins to have doubts, but Brendon makes the world look a little brighter.
But when Brendon’s department head starts to make trouble, Josh and Brendon discover that standing up for each other is the first step to standing up for themselves.

My Review: Andrew Grey is now going on my autobuy list after reading this wonderful story. Besides the fact that I am now in love with Brendan and Josh, I loved the way he portrayed the infighting in University politics and the reaction of secondary characters to Brendan's braininess. This was a short story that had all the hallmarks of a much longer one and I only wish it really had been longer.

I am bandage free and can review again!!

The bandages came off today and I can finally catch up on all the reviewing I put off through lack of finger control :D

14 by Peter Clines DNF
BLURB: Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment.
Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn't perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don't nag at him too much.
At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.
Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends.
Or the end of everything..

My Review: Just could not stay interested in the book. This might have been because of my post operation hand trouble but I think it's more likely to have been the clichéd way the whole thing was written.

My Reluctant Warden by Kallysten
3*
BLURB: When her boss brought her to the party of the season, Mr. Ward’s birthday bash, Angelina thought she had slipped on Cinderella’s shoes.
Now that she is compelled to remain in the mansion, trapped with a host who was only pleasant to her in a shared fantasy, the dream abruptly turns sour.
Under other circumstances, she might enjoy staying in an opulent guest suite, with a butler waiting on her every desire. But her cage, as gilded as it may be, remains a prison, and her host, even if he wishes she were gone, is still her warden.
As she struggles to get used to the situation, she can’t figure out what to think of Morgan Ward, a man who claims to be a vampire, who at times ignores her and at times shows himself unexpectedly thoughtful. A man she’s attracted to despite her better judgment.
However, an unexpected conversation with her boss may give her no choice but to get much closer to Morgan than she’s ready for…

My Review: I liked this addition to Ward Of The Vampire and look forward to reading part three but, it did feel a little repetitive of part one at times. Loved the bit with the shoes though :D

Questor by L.S. Gibson 4*
BLURB: The spaceship, Questor, is caught in an unknown phenomenon which results in the vessel being transported far from home. Desperately low on supplies, they discover a system with two inhabited worlds where the crew hopes to find some assistance. Captain Sullivan visits the first world, Midea, while sending a small expedition to the second. By the time Jon and Manny arrive they’ve discovered the second planet is called Rhiava. However, when trying to land they find the planet is circled by an energy field which causes their vessel to crash.
Rescued and befriended by Rhiava, Jon and Manny learn the truth about the oppression of the Mideans. The Rhiava aren’t the simple people they first appear, having strong mental skills they call Gifts. Helping the Rhiava leader, a young female called Triena, to reach safety, Jon and Manny travel across the planet’s surface. During the dangerous journey Jon and Triena become close and she is devastated when he is captured and tortured by Midean forces. Jon refuses to disclose anything and though he is finally rescued with help from Triena’s Gift, he has been hardened by his ordeal.
The Questor eventually arrives at Rhiava having learned the truth about the Mideans. Knowing that if they assist the Rhiava against the Mideans and succeed they will receive all the supplies they need, Captain Sullivan decides to help. Triena reveals some of her people’s secrets to the Questor crew and together they plan an attack on the Midean base.

My Review: There was a wonderful sub plot of romance in this story and, if I had been reading it as a romance, I would have been very disappointed at the end. However as a Science Fiction story it pressed all the right buttons for me and I loved it. There were some wonderful surprises and the author has a lovely way with words that kept me reading long past the time my hand said stop.

A Boy and His Dawg by Zoe E. Whitten 3*
BLURB: Tobe White has been friends with Keith Moon since second grade, and he thinks his attraction to his best friend is one-sided until Keith confesses his feelings. Their budding relationship leads to Keith being disowned, but Keith has a much bigger problem. During a full moon Tobe is shocked when Keith transforms into a wolf and attacks him. Despite his fears of being in love with a monster, Tobe decides to help Keith come to terms with his unleashed animal side. Somehow the young lovers must find a way to keep up appearances at school and avoid exposing Keith to the police.
Just when everything seems to be working out, a new threat arrives from out of town, and these inhuman new bullies don't like wolves or gays. If Tobe doesn't think fast, both he and Keith may end up in shallow graves.

My Review: A short but sweet m/m romance about teens and a very different reason for teen angst. I enjoyed it and loved the way Tobe and Keith coped with all that life had thrown at them.

The Rainbow Virus by Dennis Meredith
5*
BLURB: The Rainbow Virus is a gripping, realistic bioterrorism tale that launches readers on a harrowing adventure with the flips and plunges of the wildest roller coaster.
At first, loner scientist Arthur Lupo seems the most eccentric bioterrorist of all time. After vanishing from his lab at a biotech company, he releases viruses that only turn their victims a palette of colors. But then his chief pursuers—disgraced FBI agent Bobby Loudon and obsessive CDC epidemic-tracker Kathleen Shinohara—discover a horrifying fact. The brilliant Lupo has stolen the world's most lethal viruses from the Army's bioterrorism center.
Lupo reveals that his first viruses were only a test. He dramatically proves their infectivity by transforming the terrified citizens of Denver into a rainbow of colors. In a chilling declaration, he announces that he will now release an unstoppable artificial virus whose spread will decimate the world's population.
Loudon and Shinohara must race against time, a mysterious assassin, and a secret government faction to find Lupo and stop him.

My Review Dennis Meredith has written a riveting tale that has all the thrills of a block buster movie. I loved the use of all the colour terms and the interesting reactions of the people who get turned. The action was not exactly non stop but certainly breathtaking when it occurred and the science was very believable and easy to understand in the way it was presented. I am adding this author to my list of good writers to follow after reading this one.

Built 4 It (Love Bots #3)by Daisy Harris 4*
BLURB: Book three in the Love-Bots series.
When a riot erupts in Built4’s stein-building lab, the alpha stein Kee drags a submissive young lab assistant into his cage. Kee’s been studying the human. Ben’s sad eyes and slender form call to Kee — urging him to equal parts lust and possessiveness.
Prisoner to the alpha, Ben surrenders to the stein’s fierce determination and gentle seductions. He’s long hated his job, feeling like a monster for following his boss’s orders, especially once he’s seen intelligence flickering in the alpha’s green eyes.
If Kee’s to escape, he needs Ben’s help to learn about the world outside the laboratory—a world full of people, sex and experiences Kee’s only beginning to discover. And guilt-ridden over the things he’s done, Ben can only forgive himself if the alpha forgives his sins first.

My Review: I haven't read any of the Love Bot stories but that didn't seem to matter as this was an easy to follow story. The main characters were wonderful and I loved the way they interacted. Especially the way they took turns caring for each other. Overall this was a very well written short story that was worth reading.

Gay as Mardi Gras by Lily Velden 4*
BLURB:After the demise of his relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Janey, Jesse needs to get away. His nan has just the thing: a month-long cruise around Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. It seems perfect—until Jesse realizes what kind of cruise it is.
A gay cruise.
Since Jesse’s roommate, Daniel, is recovering from a broken heart, the two decide to buddy up. They hit it off, and with Daniel now Jesse's partner in crime, they explore the boat and participate in all the fun activities on offer—with some, ah, interesting results for straight boy Jesse.

My Review: This was a lovely, amusing, short story that I really enjoyed reading. I wish I'd had a nan like Jesse as she was a woman I would love to have met. Outspoken and open minded! My only criticism was that the whole idea was a little far fetched but as a quick light hearted read it truly hit it's mark.
